Deathcore aggression and the emotional depth of melodic death metal define 5RAND, an Italian modern metal band. In November 2025 they released "Ordhalia", the third LP of their career.
Despite being Italian, the band's name refers to the South African currency (rand). What is its connection (if any) to the African continent, and why 5RAND?
We like it because it represents a sign, a fragment of history that we carry with us: something small, but full of meaning.
What are the main evolutions of the band throughout its three releases: “Sacred/Scared” (2017), “Dark Mother” (2019), and “Ordhalia” (2025)?
The growth has been both musical and human.
"Sacred/Scared" represents the beginning: an identity under construction, instinct, and the first foundations.
"Dark Mother" is a phase of consolidation: more impact, more direction, and greater awareness in both sound and concept.
"Ordhalia" represents maturity: more focused songwriting, more modern and layered production, and above all a much more direct emotional weight. It’s the album where we stopped “searching for ourselves” and started truly facing ourselves.
How does Italian religiosity influence the musical concept of 5RAND?
In reality, we haven’t included religiosity as a musical influence, in the sense that it’s not something we have addressed through our music. We have a lot of respect for this subject, as everyone experiences it in their own way, and we consider it something deep that belongs to personal identity.
For now, we have chosen to talk about other themes in our songs.
The album covers feature women as central figures (less obvious on the cover of “Sacred/Scared”, where the allusion to the feminine is made through the allusion to the beginning, with Adam and Eve).
What is the relationship between the feminine and the themes focused on in 5RAND?
For us, the feminine is not “decoration,” but a powerful symbol: origin, wound, healing, and rebirth.
On the one hand, the album's name reminds us of Ordeal or "Judgment of God," the medieval method of judicial proof in which the accused was subjected to painful and dangerous physical trials, with the belief that the deity would intervene to determine guilt or innocence. On the other hand, the title track, “Ordhalia”, is inspired by the myth of Theseus and Ariadne, where devotion crumbles into ruins and the ashes of betrayal become the cradle of a darker truth. What is the concept of this album and how do its themes relate to it?
The core of the concept, for us, is the “ordeal” as a test: going through something painful and risky in order to achieve real change. It’s a word that brings together ritual, judgment, and transformation.
The album speaks precisely about this: an identity that collapses, pain that digs deep, and then rebirth — not as magic, but as the consequence of going through the experience. It’s an album about not running away.
If some mythological references enter the imagery, it’s because myth and psychology often speak the same language.
Milo Silvestro from Fear Factory participates in the track "The Nihilist." When composing the track, did you already have his collaboration in mind, or did it come later?
It came in a very natural and spontaneous way. We already knew each other, and during that period we also met in a very simple way — an evening out, a pizza, a few conversations.
We were recording, he was in Italy for a while, and from there things happened quickly: within a few days we were already working on the track together.
"Lullaby for the Broken" creates the initial atmosphere and prepares the listener for the emotional intensity of “Ordhalia”. At what point in the album's composition did this introductory instrumental track emerge? Was it a necessity or something that arose naturally?
It’s an introduction that doesn’t explain, but allows you to enter.
That track is like opening a door: it prepares the body and the mind for what comes next.
After releasing previous albums on two Italian labels, how did the Spanish label Art Gates Records come about for this third album, and what motivated the change to a non-Italian label?
It happened in a very simple way: when we were on tour in Spain, the managers of Art Gates met us in person and wanted to work with us. A human and artistic connection was born, and the choice was spontaneous.
Does “Ordhalia” mark a cycle for 5RAND or is it a stage in a cycle under construction?
It’s a fundamental stage, but not the end. It’s a declared transformation, a turning point: after this album, we’re not the same anymore.
But precisely because it speaks about metamorphosis, Ordhalia feels more like the beginning of a new cycle than the closure of one.
With so much emotional depth, does it ever become painful to compose or record in 5RAND?
Yes. Sometimes it truly is painful.
But it’s a “useful” pain: the kind that forces you not to lie. In the studio, certain parts stay on your skin and take you back there. At the same time, it’s cathartic — turning that weight into sound is how we give it shape and avoid being crushed by it.

Apesar de serem italianos, o nome da banda faz referência à moeda sul-africana (rand). Qual é a vossa ligação (se é que existe) com o continente africano e porquê 5RAND?
Não existe qualquer ligação “temática” com África em termos de influências musicais ou líricas. O nome vem de um episódio muito concreto. O “5 Rand” refere-se a uma moeda sul-africana que se tornou um símbolo e uma espécie de amuleto da sorte, e daí o nome ter permanecido. Gostamos dele porque representa um sinal, um fragmento da história que transportamos connosco: algo pequeno, mas cheio de significado.
Quais as principais evoluções da banda ao longo dos seus três lançamentos: “Sacred/Scared” (2017), “Dark Mother” (2019) e “Ordhalia” (2025)?
O crescimento foi tanto musical como humano.
“Sacred/Scared” representa o início: uma identidade em construção, instinto e os primeiros alicerces.
“Dark Mother” é uma fase de consolidação: mais impacto, mais direção e maior consciência tanto no som como no conceito.
“Ordhalia” representa a maturidade: composições mais focadas, produção mais moderna e complexa e, acima de tudo, um peso emocional muito mais direto. É o álbum em que deixamos de nos “procurar” e começamos a encarar-nos de verdade.
Analisando os temas dos três álbuns, encontramos conceitos comuns: luta interior, dor emocional, sentimentos de culpa, autocrítica e julgamento social, o conflito entre crença e razão ou a relação entre fé e repressão emocional. Todos são convites profundos para compreendermos quem somos e o que representamos no mundo.,De que forma a religiosidade italiana influencia o conceito musical dos 5RAND?
Na verdade, não incluímos a religiosidade como influência musical, no sentido em que não é algo que abordamos na nossa música. Temos muito respeito por este tema, pois cada um vive-o à sua maneira, e consideramo-lo algo profundo que pertence à identidade pessoal. Por ora, optámos por abordar outros temas presentes nas nossas músicas.
As capas dos álbuns apresentam mulheres como figuras centrais (menos óbvio na capa de “Sacred/Scared”, onde a alusão ao feminino é feita através da referência ao início, com Adão e Eva). Qual a relação entre o feminino e os temas abordados em 5RAND?
Para nós, o feminino não é “decoração”, mas um símbolo poderoso: origem, ferida, cura e renascimento.
Se por um lado, o nome do álbum remete para a Ordália ou “Julgamento de Deus”, o método medieval de prova judicial em que o acusado era submetido a provas físicas dolorosas e perigosas, com a crença de que a divindade interviria para determinar a culpa ou a inocência, por outro lado, a faixa-título, “Ordhalia”, é inspirada no mito de Teseu e Ariadne, onde a devoção se desfaz em ruínas e as cinzas da traição se tornam o berço de uma verdade mais sombria. Qual é o conceito deste álbum e como é que os seus temas se relacionam com ele?
O cerne do conceito, para nós, é a “prova” como teste: passar por algo doloroso e arriscado para alcançar uma mudança real. É uma palavra que reúne ritual, julgamento e transformação.
O álbum fala precisamente sobre isso: uma identidade que se desmorona, uma dor que se aprofunda e, depois, o renascimento — não como magia, mas como consequência da vivência da experiência. É um álbum sobre não fugir.
Se algumas referências mitológicas aparecem nas imagens, é porque o mito e a psicologia falam muitas vezes a mesma linguagem.
Milo Silvestro, dos Fear Factory, participa no tema "The Nihilist". Ao comporem este tema, já tinham esta colaboração em mente ou surgiu mais tarde?
Aconteceu de uma forma muito natural e espontânea. Já nos conhecíamos e, durante esse período, encontrámo-nos de uma forma muito simples — uma saída à noite, uma pizza, algumas conversas.
Estávamos a gravar, ele esteve em Itália durante algum tempo, e a partir daí as coisas aconteceram rapidamente: em poucos dias já estávamos a trabalhar juntos na faixa.
"Lullaby for the Broken" cria a atmosfera inicial e prepara o ouvinte para a intensidade emocional de "Ordhalia". Em que momento da composição do álbum surgiu esta faixa instrumental introdutória? Foi uma necessidade ou algo que surgiu naturalmente?
É uma introdução que não explica, mas permite a entrada.
Esta faixa é como abrir uma porta: prepara o corpo e a mente para o que vem a seguir.
Após lançarem álbuns anteriores por duas editoras italianas, como surgiu a editora espanhola Art Gates Records para este terceiro álbum, e o que motivou a mudança para uma editora não italiana?
Aconteceu de uma forma muito simples: quando estávamos em digressão por Espanha, os responsáveis da Art Gates conheceram-nos pessoalmente e quiseram trabalhar connosco. Nasceu uma ligação humana e artística, e a escolha foi espontânea.
“Ordhalia” marca um ciclo para 5RAND ou é uma etapa num ciclo em construção?
É uma etapa fundamental, mas não o fim. É uma transformação assumida, um ponto de viragem: depois deste álbum, já não somos os mesmos.
Mas precisamente por falar em metamorfose, “Ordhalia” parece mais o início de um novo ciclo do que o encerramento de um.
Com tanta profundidade emocional, compor ou gravar em 5RAND chega a ser doloroso?
Sim. Às vezes é mesmo doloroso.
Mas é uma dor “útil”: o tipo de dor que obriga a não mentir. No estúdio, certas partes ficam na tua pele e levam-te de volta para lá. Ao mesmo tempo, é catártico — transformar esse peso em som é a forma como lhe damos forma e evitamos ser esmagados por ele.
