Hailing from America via Eclipse Records, Valkyrie's Fire is a symphonic power metal band whose lyrical themes are based on European Norse mythology. They released their debut EP, Ascencion, on November 8, 2024. To learn more about Valkyrie's Fire and Ascencion, BACKSTAGE 2.0 spoke with Dave Hale, the band's bassist and founder.
How did Valkyrie's Fire come about?
Thank you for the opportunity to speak with you about our band. My name is Dave Hale - founder and bassist for Valkyrie’s Fire, and I’m happy to do a bit of a deep dive into our band and it’s history with you.
Valkyrie’s Fire started as a vision from the heart and soul of Founder and Bassist Dave Hale in early 2020.
During the summer of 2020, Dave started the process of writing lyrics, designing the logo, creating social media pages, a marketing strategy, and looking for bandmates that had the same passion for Symphonic Power Metal.
Dave’s background consists of both informal music training and recording engineering during his formative years from his father - who was also an engineer and bassist - and formal educational training in both marketing and recording industry management.
This has allowed Dave to bring his vision to life in creating the brand behind the band.
Male vocalist Adam Sanders joined in the summer of 2021, bringing his background of music composition to the band. His education in music theory and composition has provided the band with their signature blend of metal and classical styles, while his lyric writing, vocal ability, and formal training have also contributed to the signature vocal sound Valkyrie’s Fire were looking to create with a dual vocalist approach.
While still diligently working to create the Valkyrie’s Fire brand, the search for bandmates for Valkyrie’s Fire continued moving forward, with drummer Ryan Metroka - formerly with the progressive metal band Crusade - joining in the fall of 2022. Ryan’s unique ability on the drums combined with his formal educational background in percussion, has created the signature power metal backbeat that is so prominent in Valkyrie’s Fire.
Finding the ideal candidates for guitarist, keyboardist, and female vocalist proved to be a long process, with Dave, Adam, and Ryan networking within the local music metal scene in Nashville, and searching for the ideal musicians that would bring the vision of Valkyrie’s Fire to life.
In June of 2023, guitar virtuoso Joey Grimaldi, joined Valkyrie’s Fire after being approached by bassist Dave Hale and drummer Ryan Metroka during a local recurring music event held in Nashville - called Guitar Night - where Dave and Ryan had frequently been spectators and supporters.
Joey’s training and formal education in classical music, blended with his passion for Symphonic Metal, bring a unique set of skills to the band. Joey has formal training in both guitar and piano, and his ability to compose and write music, creates the signature sound, for which Valkyrie’s Fire is known.
Female vocalist Beth Floyd - known to her fans as Bettie - joined forces with Valkyrie’s Fire a few weeks later, in July of 2023, bringing her passion and love for Symphonic Metal to the band.
She started her vocal training in her teenage years, taking vocal lessons regularly, and pursuing her dream to become a Symphonic Metal singer.
Bettie’s unique blend of lyric soprano and mezzo soprano vocals are drawn from her longtime inspiration Tarja Turunen - former vocalist for the powerhouse Symphonic Metal band Nightwish - and Bettie has the ability to evoke the emotional and powerful sound that Valkyrie’s Fire was looking for in a female vocalist.
Last, but not least, in August 2025, Keyboardist and Cellist Salem Belladonna joined the band. Her background in music began in her early teenage years, and she has completed classical and formal training - graduating from college in Los Angeles with a degree in Cello, and Music Composition & Arrangement. Salem is also a vocalist and will join forces with Adam and Bettie in several powerful 3 part harmonies.
What is the concept behind the band?
Valkyrie’s Fire is classified as a Symphonic Power Metal band, and cites their musical influences as several bands from both the Power Metal genre and Symphonic Metal genre.
The concept behind the band - and the brand - is blending epic power metal with emotion evoking Symphonic Metal. Norse mythology is certainly an inspiration in the writing style, but the lyrics are also very relatable to current times and topics - allowing the band to express their creativity in their songs in a much broader approach than you may find in typical Viking Metal.
The slogan “EPIC EUROPEAN METAL FROM THE USA” is the perfect summarization for Valkyrie’s Fire, and also what sets them apart from any other band from the USA.
Five years separate the band's formation from Ascension - your debut EP. Was this time necessary to consolidate band, ideas, and concepts before a release? And why didn't you opt for an LP?
The formation of the band was the longest portion of the almost 5 years before our release. It was a painstaking process to find exactly the right band members who were not only talented musicians, but who were also very passionate about this band and taking the entire European genre by storm!
After the formation of the band in July 2023, we started the process of putting together the music of Valkyrie’s Fire, and in early 2024, we decided on releasing just a 5 song EP - basically a summary of the diversity in our writing and musical style, which would allow our fans to get a taste of what is to come on our new full length album coming in late 2025 / early 2026, which will also feature our newest band member Salem Belladonna on keyboards and cello. Just as we gave you a diverse set of songs on the EP, the new LP will also feature a diverse mix of powerful and epic songs that you will love!
One of the things that stands out throughout this EP is the drum sound. Although all the instruments have a very powerful sound, the drums stand out for their almost ritualistic intensity. Is this intentional, part of Valkyrie's Fire's DNA, or did it emerge organically/spontaneously?
The drum sound is all from the mind of our brilliant drummer Ryan Metroka. His ability to bring that ritualistic intensity to the music is dynamic and powerful, and when mixed by our guitarist Joey Grimaldi and mastered by Seven Spires guitarist Jack Kosto, the drums cut through prominently in each of our songs. It’s very easy for our fans to start dancing, head-banging, and have a memorable time singing our songs with us during our live performances. That dynamic intensity will continue through into our upcoming full length album, and we are excited to share it with you very soon!!
It's impossible to talk about Valkyrie's Fire without mentioning the voice of Beth Floyd, a true Valkyrie soprano. Beth and Adam Sanders are the band's vocal duo. When Beth joined the band, Adam was already the lead singer. Was it always a goal to have a male/female duet with these vocal characteristics? What do you consider this adds to the band's concept?
The goal was always to have dual vocalists with a male and a female sharing all vocal duties. Adam and Bettie are both such great vocalists and they compliment each other so well. What you hear in our recordings is actually what you hear during our live performances, and to see the sheer power they emit in their vocal performances will make the hair stand up on your skin, and evoke your deepest emotions. Bettie is such a true powerhouse soprano vocalist, and I dare say, she is one of the rare sopranos in the Symphonic and Power metal genre that has the voice with the same power that is right up there with powerhouse sopranos such as Tarja Turunen, Floor Jansen, Dianne Van Giersbergen, Simone Simons, and Elize Ryd.
I believe that this dual vocalist approach has really solidified the music of Valkyrie’s Fire as a true contender and the best newcomer in the genre, and with Valkyrie’s Fire being awarded the FemMetal Awards Best Breakthrough Artist in 2024, it has been proven that worldwide attention is being given to our band and that we are on the cusp on some incredibly great moments to come!! Our goal is to prove to the world that powerful and epic music can be made in the USA - even in the country music capital of the world.
Your lyrics are inspired by European Norse mythology. Why did you choose this theme?
The initial goal was to infuse some Norse mythology with current topics, and to pay homage to the battles we all endure on one level or another every day. Warrior of the Night is a song that is a tribute to musicians around the world who are widely considered Warriors of the Night because of the sheer amount of work we all put into our craft, and typically we fight the ongoing battle to deliver our music every night to our dedicated fans. This song is also dedicated to each of the fans - who show up each night for those concerts and support us! I wanted to show my appreciation to the musicians and fans around the world while mixing it into a title that one might typically envision as a typical Viking song. Several of our songs incorporate that procedure and process.
If you had to choose a mythological episode and character to describe you (each of you), which one would it be and why?
Adam: With his beautiful hair, his ability to compose music and lyrics, I would have to say Adam would be Apollo - the Greek god of music, poetry, and considered to be the most beautiful god.
Bettie: As the goddess of the Valkyries, with an ethereal voice, who commands the seduction of all those who hear her voice and see her beauty, Freya would have to be the best representation of Bettie.
Salem: Another important female in Norse Mythology, who was known as the matron of the arts, Frigg was known for her kindness, and her ability to bring order to the kingdom. Salem represents that role as a cellist and keyboardist in Valkyrie’s Fire, where her skills are vital parts of the music we create.
Joey: Given the role of his music being able to charm all living things, and widely considered the most musical of all mythological people, Orpheus is the king of all music, just as our guitarist Joey is also known to be with his otherworldly musical abilities.
Dave: As the founder of Valkyrie’s Fire and a lyricist in the band, Dave would most likely be similar to the Norse god Odin - also known as the AllFather, commander of the Valkyries, and patron of wisdom and poetry.
Ryan: As the god of thunder in Valkyrie’s Fire, and with his strength and the ability to have a true Warrior nature, Ryan is best represented by the Norse god Thor.
Ascension is an ambitious title for a debut EP. It relates to the story it tells while also defining the band's intentions. Where is this EP taking you as a band? Is it meeting your expectations?
Yes! There is a bit of irony behind that title for our debut album, and it’s a great story that I think you’ll enjoy!
Like everything we do in our band, each band member has equal input because we genuinely like to do everything together. So each band member wrote down their top 5 choices and we narrowed it down anonymously so no special treatment was given to anyone in particular or their choices. Ascension became the top choice and only several days later did everyone reveal their choices to the other band members, and Ascension was actually one of my suggestions for the new album.
It is a fitting album title for a debut album because it absolutely describes our goals and intentions with our music and our career. Valkyrie’s Fire is a band on the rise, and the Ascension of our band has certainly been something we intentionally have spoken into existence.
Our debut EP has been very positively received with many top tier reviews - which are featured on our website - including a very positive writeup from a BraveWords editor after our performance at the Legions of Metal Festival held back in May 2025. We have received several great awards, nominations, and incredibly, we were chosen as the Wacken Metal Battle Band of the Week in March 2025.
To answer your question - in summary, we are very proud of Ascension and the outstanding reviews it has received from around the world. We aim for the stars, and this has been a very good launch for our band! Our upcoming full length album is going to exceed what we accomplished with Ascension, and we cannot wait to unleash it to the world, and we DO have all intentions of becoming the best newcomer to the Symphonic Power Metal scene and take the worldwide stage we have worked so hard to step onto.
In 2024, the band was nominated for Group of the Year at the Josie Awards in the rock/metal category. How did you experience this, and how much did it help you promote the band?
That nomination was certainly an honor for Valkyrie’s Fire, and we are very appreciative to now have been nominated for the Josie Awards Group of the Year in 2025 as well. Being chosen for such an incredible honor for 2 consecutive years is a testament to the quality of our music, and to our dedication to being the best band we can possibly be in this genre!
Our music video Ride of the Valkyrie was also nominated as the Music Video of the Year, and we also have nominations from the Josie Awards for Actor of the Year in a Music Video and Actress of the Year in a Music Video. There are some great bands in our genre around the world, so we humbly accept these incredible nominations and awards!!
It has allowed our band to be showcased and noticed on many levels, with several festivals in 2025, including as the headliner for the SouthWest Power Fest in Sept. 2025, with lots of great shows in 2026 already being planned.
How is Ascension being received in America and abroad? Are there any differences in reactions, reviews, or feedback?
If we are being honest, the USA is not typically the hub of great music any longer, sadly, and any new metal acts have a tough time breaking through into the mainstream in the USA due to the music industry following what they believe to be the latest trends. However, those trends are only limited to the USA because the rest of the world understand the true complexities of great music and they also have a deep appreciation for great original music, so the reception in the rest of the Americas as well as in Europe and Asia has been great!! We have shipped CD’s worldwide, and our largest following is in both Europe and South America. We plan to visit both of those continents very soon!
The reviews have been phenomenal from the world media, with the press regularly raving about our music, our talents, and our incredible ability to pay tribute to the Symphonic and Power Metal genres, while creatively re-writing the new frontiers ahead and carrying the torch of our amazing predecessors, such as Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica, Amaranthe, Powerwolf, etc.
We are truly honored by these mentions and comparisons, and we look forward to the day we get to tour with our mentors, and share the stage with them!!

We can reveal a few exciting things coming up!
We have a new full length album in the works to be released late 2025 / early 2026. Our new band member, Salem Belladonna, will be featured on the new album on keyboards and cello, and she will be joining us on stage for the first time in Sept. 2025. Salem also has a song that she wrote that will be featured on the new album as well.
Like Bettie had done when she auditioned for the band with her song “Empty”, Salem also submitted several songs she had composed, arranged, and performed in her audition, and we chose one of her songs to be included on this new album. While we can’t reveal the new song just yet, we can assure you it is an epic, powerful, and emotional track that we all decided needed to be included on the new album, and we are very excited to unveil it very soon!
We have new music videos coming up, which will be just as epic as the ones we have previously done, and we have a ton of new shows coming up already for 2026. Maybe you’ll hear those announcements very soon? Perhaps a tour?
2026 will be a grand year for Valkyrie’s Fire as we progress in our music, in our travels, and with our passion for creating the most incredibly epic music you’ve ever heard!! Vocals will be soaring even higher, guitars will be even more intense, keys and cello will be incredibly passionate, and the drums and bass will be even more powerful!! Ascension was just a small prelude for what is coming up with our new music!!!

Bettie é uma vocalista soprano verdadeiramente poderosa, e arrisco dizer que é uma das raras sopranos do género Symphonic e Power Metal que possui uma voz com a mesma potência que a de sopranos poderosas como Tarja Turunen, Floor Jansen, Dianne Van Giersbergen, Simone Simons e Elize Ryd.

As vossas letras são inspiradas na mitologia nórdica europeia. Qual o motivo para a escolha desta temática?
O objetivo inicial era infundir um pouco da mitologia nórdica com temas atuais e homenagear as batalhas que todos enfrentamos, de uma forma ou de outra, todos os dias. Warrior of the Night é uma canção que homenageia músicos de todo o mundo, amplamente considerados Guerreiros da Noite devido à enorme quantidade de trabalho que dedicamos à nossa arte, e normalmente travamos a batalha contínua para entregar a nossa música todas as noites aos nossos fãs dedicados. Esta música é também dedicada a cada um dos fãs – que todas as noites comparecem a estes concertos e nos apoiam! Queria mostrar a minha gratidão aos músicos e fãs de todo o mundo, misturando isto a um título que normalmente se poderia imaginar como uma típica música viking. Várias das nossas músicas incorporam este procedimento e processo.
Se tivesses de escolher um episódio e personagem mitológica para descrever cada membro da banda, qual seria e porquê?

Como tudo o que fazemos na nossa banda, cada membro tem o mesmo contributo, porque gostamos muito de fazer tudo juntos. Assim, cada membro da banda escreveu as suas cinco principais escolhas que reunimos anonimamente para que não fosse dado nenhum tratamento especial a ninguém em particular ou às suas escolhas. Ascension tornou-se a primeira escolha e apenas alguns dias depois todos revelaram as suas escolhas aos restantes membros da banda, e Ascension foi, na verdade, uma das minhas sugestões para o novo álbum.
É um título apropriado para um álbum de estreia, porque descreve perfeitamente os nossos objetivos e intenções com a nossa música e a nossa carreira. Valkyrie's Fire é uma banda em ascensão, e o Ascension da nossa banda foi certamente algo que trouxemos intencionalmente à existência.
O nosso EP de estreia foi recebido de forma muito positiva, com muitas críticas de alto nível – que estão disponíveis no nosso site – incluindo uma crítica muito positiva de um editor da BraveWords após a nossa atuação no Legions of Metal Festival, realizado em maio de 2025. Recebemos vários prémios e nomeações excelentes e, incrivelmente, fomos escolhidos como a Banda da Batalha de Bandas de Metal da Semana do Wacken em março de 2025.
Para responder à tua pergunta, em resumo, estamos muito orgulhosos do Ascension e das excelentes críticas que recebeu de todo o mundo. O nosso objetivo é alcançar as estrelas, e este foi um grande lançamento para a nossa banda! O nosso próximo trabalho, um LP, vai superar o que conseguimos com Ascension, e mal podemos esperar para o lançar para o mundo. Temos TODA a intenção de nos tornarmos os melhores estreantes na cena Symphonic Power Metal e subir ao palco mundial para qual tanto trabalhámos para alcançar.
Em 2024, a banda foi nomeada para o prémio de Banda do Ano nos Josie Awards na categoria rock/metal. Como foi essa experiência e como ajudou a promover a banda?
Esta nomeação foi certamente uma honra para os Valkyrie's Fire, e estamos muito gratos por termos sido nomeados para o prémio de Banda do Ano dos Josie Awards em 2025 também. Sermos escolhidos para uma honra tão incrível por dois anos consecutivos é uma prova da qualidade da nossa música e da nossa dedicação em ser a melhor banda possível neste género!
O nosso videoclipe Ride of the Valkyrie foi também nomeado para o prémio de videoclip do Ano, e temos também nomeações dos Josie Awards para Actor do Ano em videoclip e atriz do Ano em videoclip. Existem grandes bandas do nosso género em todo o mundo, por isso aceitamos humildemente estas nomeações e prémios incríveis!!
Isto permitiu que a nossa banda fosse divulgada e notada a diversos níveis, com vários festivais em 2025, incluindo como cabeça de cartaz do SouthWest Power Fest em setembro de 2025, e muitos concertos incríveis já planeados para 2026.
Como está a ser recebido Ascension nos Estados Unidos e no estrangeiro? Existe alguma diferença nas reações, críticas ou feedback?
Se formos honestos, os EUA já não são o centro da boa música, infelizmente, e qualquer nova banda de metal tem dificuldade em destacar-se no mainstream americano devido à indústria musical seguir o que acreditam ser as últimas tendências. No entanto, estas tendências limitam-se apenas aos EUA, porque o resto do mundo compreende as verdadeiras complexidades da boa música e também tem um profundo apreço pela boa música original, pelo que a recepção no resto das Américas, bem como na Europa e na Ásia, tem sido óptima!! Já enviámos CDs para todo o mundo, e o nosso maior número de seguidores está na Europa e na América do Sul. Prevemos visitar estes dois continentes em breve!
As críticas têm sido fenomenais nos media mundiais, com a imprensa a elogiar regularmente a nossa música, os nossos talentos e a nossa incrível capacidade de homenagear os géneros Symphonic e Power Metal, ao mesmo tempo que reescrevemos criativamente as novas fronteiras que estão por vir e transportamos a tocha dos nossos incríveis antecessores, como Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica, Amaranthe, Powerwolf, etc.

Podemos revelar algumas novidades entusiasmantes!
Temos um novo álbum completo em produção, com lançamento previsto para o final de 2025, início de 2026. O nosso novo membro da banda, Salem Belladonna, participará no novo álbum tocando teclado e violoncelo, e juntar-se-á a nós em palco pela primeira vez em Setembro de 2025. Salem tem também uma música da sua autoria no novo álbum.
Tal como Bettie fez quando fez audições para a banda com a sua música Empty Salem também enviou várias músicas que compôs, arranjou e interpretou na sua audição, e nós escolhemos uma delas para ser incluída neste novo álbum. Embora ainda não possamos revelar a nova música, podemos garantir que é uma faixa épica, poderosa e emocionante que todos nós decidimos que precisava de ser incluída no novo álbum, e estamos muito entusiasmados para a revelar em breve!
Temos novos videoclipes a chegar, que serão tão épicos como os que já fizemos, e já temos vários novos concertos para 2026. Talvez ouçam estes anúncios em breve? Talvez uma digressão?
2026 será um grande ano para Valkyrie's Fire, à medida que progredimos na nossa música, nas nossas viagens e com a nossa paixão por criar a música mais incrivelmente épica que alguma vez ouviram!!
